Uber launches app for Windows phones
The cab service firm, whose native app is specially optimized for the Windows phone platform, is also offering `500 off on the first two rides for app downloads
Bangalore: San Francisco-based luxury cab service provider Uber Technologies Inc., which entered India about a year ago, on Thursday launched its mobile app for Windows phone users.
So far, the app was only available on Android and iOS platforms and users of Windows phones had to access Uber through its mobile site. Now the native app is specially optimized for the Windows phone platform, Uber said. The company is also running a promotion to get more users to download its app by offering ₹ 500 off on the first two rides.
The Google Inc.-backed start-up that started its operations in 2009 is present in 39 countries. In India, it offers its services in Bangalore, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai and Pune.
In India, Uber competes with taxi companies such as Olacabs, Meru Cabs and TaxiForSure.
The company launched its India operations last August with its higher priced, luxury car service, UberBLACK that charged a minimum of ₹ 250 per ride.
Though the company, which accepts payments only through credit cards, reduced fares later, they were still at least 50% higher, on average, than those of rivals such as Meru Cabs and Olacabs. Late last month, Uber launched its lower priced brand UberX in three cities in India.
