Lounge Review | Me So Happi, Mumbai

Another all-day caf that needs to seriously rethink its menu

Me So Happi falls in a new category of “multi-cuisine" cafés that are slowly popping up in neighbourhoods across the city. Normally, we welcome a change to the standard salad-sandwich-smoothie sort of fare offered by all-day establishments but at Me So Happi, the Continental, Oriental and Indian dishes make up a confusing menu without any strong dishes. We may still go back to the new eatery for its funky and spacious interiors that make it a nice hangout spot on the Bandra-Khar-Santacruz stretch, otherwise filled with cramped and compact diners.

The good stuff

Housed in the sprawling ground-floor space of an apartment building on Linking Road, Me So Happi is dressed up like a dollhouse with candy-coloured accents and murals, chequered flooring, and mismatched furniture. The mantelpieces are scattered with cherished playthings from childhood—mason jars filled with Kismi toffees and Bulls Eye candy, antique toys, robot stickers and board games. We even spotted a fake, life-size, lipstick-red refrigerator and a teal-coloured kitchenette that look like they belong in a toy set. With ceiling-to-floor windows across the entire length of the restaurant, Me So Happi is a very pretty spot to float back on a nostalgic cloud and reminisce about childhood escapades while sipping on tea or coffee.

Between multiple rounds of Uno, we tried the Baked Potato Skins ( 220) with refried beans, corn, peppers and cheese, and a Fajita Style wrap ( 270) with avocado. Both these dishes fell under the “not bad" category for us; we felt the ingredients were not nearly as fresh as they could’ve been and they were both served to us cold. Similarly, though we enjoyed the spicy mustard-based curry in our Fish Curry, Kebabs, Rice and Poppadum combo ( 450), we found the chunky pieces of fish to be slightly stale and smelly. Our favourite order at Me So Happi was a tropical smoothie called PacMan ( 175), made with fresh pineapple juice, banana and canned mango juice.

The not-so-good

We were quite disappointed with all the food we ate for dinner on a Sunday at Me So Happi, it almost felt as if the dishes had been prepped at lunch and served after a quick spin in the microwave. When the chef noticed that we weren’t enjoying the food, he offered us free dessert and invited us to return for a complimentary meal. But none of the desserts on the counter—the usual selection of brownies, chocolate truffle pastries and cheesecakes—looked interesting or appetizing enough to be ordered. The service was quite slow despite the fact that only a handful of tables were occupied and our server forgot to bring us our order of the Batman Cocktail, made with orange, lime and Grenadine, even after we asked for it repeatedly.

Talk plastic

The food and drink prices are on a par with most other all-day cafés in the neighbourhood. Salads and starters are priced at 200-450; sandwiches, burgers and mains cost 250-500, and desserts, smoothies and milkshakes, 110-175. We paid a total of 1,800 for two starters, a wrap, a seafood main course and a fruit-based smoothie.
