It is safe to say the deaths of people connected in any way with an admissions scam in Madhya Pradesh is highly suspicious. Even by India’s weak standards of law and order, a murderous rampage is on.

On Saturday, a journalist investigating the scam died in suspicious circumstances in Jhabua district. A day later, the dean of a medical college, involved in the probe, was found dead. So far, around 40 people with links to the case have died.

It’s high time Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordered an impartial probe, preferably by judicial authorities outside the state. His government risks damage to its credibility if he does not take corrective steps now as the matter has gone beyond any possible partisan defence.

Ideally, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, should have quit by now. His continuation as head of government in the state erodes confidence in the fairness of an ongoing probe in the case.
