Maharashtra brings in Right to Services ordinance
Under the law, a poll promise of BJP, the govt has pledged to deliver 160 services within a stipulated time
Mumbai: Maharashtra on Tuesday became the 20th state in India to have a law that binds the state government and its agencies to deliver designated services in a stipulated time, with governor C. Vidyasagar Rao signing an ordinance to this effect.
Under the Right to Services Act, a poll promise of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, the government has pledged to deliver caste certificate, land records, income certificates and domicile certificates among 160 services within a stipulated time. The law empowers citizens to sue the government official concerned for delays and has a provision to extract penalty as well.
Government departments and local self-government bodies like zilla parishads and municipal corporations are covered by the provisions of the Act.
