I have been buying and reading Wired magazine for at least 10 years now, and the January 2009 issue is probably the lightest and thinnest I have ever seen. I have no way of validating this, nor do I know whether it is the lightest and thinnest issue in the magazine's history.Wired, and Red Herring rode the dotcom boom in the late 1990s and the early 2000s before downsizing significantly when the boom went bust. Even in those days (and I made a trip to the storeroom and took a cursory look at dusty back issues of Wired stacked there), I do not thing Wired was ever as thin and light as the January edition.

So, what does this mean? Simply that the US advertising market is shrinking, as indicated by this article in The Wall Street Journal . "With U.S. ad spending expected to fall 6.2% to $161.8 billion this year, marketers and ad firms will be forced to do more with less, say advertising gurus," says the article.

That's probably happening in India as well.
