My Vents with IPL - Pinch Hitter

My Vents with IPL

Manoj Madhavan - Monday, April 21, 2008 3:31 PM

Hi all,

Thank you for the feedback and comments… I love to agree and partially disagree to your thoughts. Cricket is such you can endlessly keep debating. Lets enjoy this blog with some stats, some likes and some dislikes in IPL. 5 matches old what IPL has so far seen:-61 sixes, 131 fours, 1565 runs in 187 overs, at an average of 8.6 runs My likes and dislikes on IPL over the weekend.

MY LIKES IN IPL

Favourite moments

Ricky Pointing celebrating a dismissal with Ishant Sharma.Rahul Dravid’s straight drive being applauded by Mukesh Ambani.

Saurav Ganguly having a word with Ricky Ponting when Symonds and Mathew Hayden were at the crease.

Muthiah Murlitharan bowling to Sangakara and finally dismissing him.Harbhajan celebrating Rahul Dravid’s caught and bowled.Last but not the least – Virat Kohli’s spectacular catch at point, dismissing Luke Ronchi of Zaheer Khan’s bowling.

Something New

The Orange Cap – It would be interesting to see for how long would Brendon McCullum cap it. I thought it was a good gesture for the highest individual scorer of the tournament.

Promising Youngsters

Vinay Kumar, Ashok Dinda, Wriddhiman Prasanta Saha, Arjun Yadav, Virat Kohli.

MY DISLIKES IN IPL

Poor anchoring

I always used to appreciate Ajay Jadeja’s expert comments on NDTV. But I differ a lot when he is an anchor. I think the two jobs have different profiles and as such need different set of skills. Jadeja slipped a bit too much while anchoring in these few days. He had an abrupt finish to most sentences. He kept mentioning Aleem Dar when actually Asad Rauf the third umpire was being interviewed. Not that Lekha who was interviewing Asad Rauf had a clue on who she was interviewing and had weird questions such as: “Who do you support Mumbai Indians or Bangalore Royal Challengers?”  She got an apt answer for this one: “We umpires are not here to have favourites but to make decisions”.  Shiv Pundit the other anchor for Mumbai Indians and Bangalore Royal Challengers match announced Rajasthan Royal as winners. Pheww…

Hungry for ads

Commentators, it is advisable, that you do not talk after the last ball of the over has been bowled. Sony, in its rush to make money, often cuts them short to insert an ad. Nothing could be more annoying than an expert being cut in the middle of his comment.  Symonds interview after the match could only be seen and not heard as there was no audio!  Anil Kapoor’s interview met an abrupt end.  Poor camera workMatch 4 Chargers Vs Kolkata Knight RidersBall 15.2  R P Singh to Mohammed Hafeez, ball goes to third man and camera was searching for it in point region.

Bangalore Royal Challengers Vs Mumbai Indians

Ball 1.3 Zaheer Khan to Luke Ronchi. The screen didn’t show the ball as it was still playing a replay of the previous ball. Hope as IPL progresses the list of my likes would increase and dislikes shorten. Please feel free  to vent your ire!

i agree to your points but the biggest dislike i have about IPL is that i do not have that hard crave for a particular team the one we enjoy when india play against other team . there is always a strong will that only india should win. That junoon is missing here

Hi Manoj, I agree with what you said about the quality of the broadcast. The anchors were abysmal, the ball-follow really poor -- as bad as DD in its heyday. The ad cutaways weren't just annoying at the end of each over, where they often butted in even before the ball was dead; they happened between deliveries, where the broadcast was 'shrunk' so we could witness, gobsmacked, the logo animation of a popular mobile telephony service, presumably because it was supposed to be more interesting than anything the experts might have been saying about the action of the previous delivery. IPL may be a fairy tale opportunity for Sony to make money, but someone ought to tell them about the goose that laid golden eggs...

Likings: Shahrukh khan and co. enthusiasm is the best thing to watch in IPL. Definitely the energy is doing good to the team 'Knight Riders'. Great to see Ghandhis enjoying to the fullest. Delhi lad Virat Kohli(playing for Bangalore) is the guy to watch. His aggression and athletism are the characteristics of a rising star. Sixers-Amount of sixers are amazing and this is what we want in 20-20 format. We can see ball touching roofs of the stadium, but it be a great sight if someone gets the ball out of the big stadiums. Dislikes: Will agree to points mentioned by Manoj on poor anchoring and ads for making money, ignoring viwers from the important coverage they would look for. The anchors seems to be lacking knowledge on the subject and tend to ask stupid questions.

Best Moment: I liked the Ricky-Ponting-hugging-Ishant-Sharma bit. That summarizes the IPL theme well. A lot like Rooney and Ronaldo, wasn't it? Dislikes- Ads: Well there are many but Advertisements are a huge one. Not only are the overs ending abruptly, we don't even get to see the replays or the innings stats when a batsman is dismissed. To top it, they have those irritating Godrej and Vodafone ads which are louder than the commentary. Not that the commentators have much to say anyway. I was looking for an alternative service provider for my cell phone connection but Vodafone has really ticked me off well enough to not consider them. It's time that these were scrutinized by someone or may be there is a pay per view system for the DTH subscribers with no commercials. Dislikes- Coverage: Well, the balls are not spotted, the commentators are scarce (4/match- even Tony Cozier agreed to the fact while he was interviewing Akshay Kumar during DDD v. RR), the anchors lack experience and ability etc. etc... You can go and on about it to no avail. I think MAX would atleast match DD's quality if it improves a tad. Jadeja was aweful with his anchoring in the first match and even signed off from 'Turning Point' and later apologized saying that he is too used to NDTV. Others- Well, I think one striking aspect of the IPL is the dresses the teams have chosen, their colors and the sponsors logos. What's disheartening to see is that a lot of people simply have stick-on logos which come with a distintive white background and look really cheap. I think the worst dressed are the Punjabis and the logos look like they are actually a spoof on advertising. Delhi and Mumbai look decent but Bangalore and Chennai have horrible colors. Kolkata owners have taken a perfectly decent color and made the players look like sideys of an item number for Shahrukh. Take a cue from how brilliant black can be from NZC. Finally, it's too early to say but still sad to feel that none of the icons (or thereabouts) have made and impact or have been available to make an impact. I hope this changes soon.

Agreements and disagreements on IPL will always continue..Every indian is a doctor ( try telling that u have a stomach ache to a stranger in a bus and u will get 100s of antidotes on the spot) and a self proclaimed cricket expert/guru ( Oh god!!! what is yuvraj doing ???? he should have played a cover drive to this ball). Well,i havent decided which team to support yet. Been cheering individuals purely on merit. Maybe its the constitution of the team to blame or applaud for this. I am a great fan of Saurav but dont like SRK (Amitabh & Amir's Fan), like Ishant, not Ponting. Will certainly have to wait before deciding which team jersey to wear, though personally i like the Delhi team jersey better than the rest. I completely agree with u all on the coverage/commentary issue. It looks anything but a cricket match coverage. I have a feeling that the commentary is very subdued as compared to the tempo of the match. We have lost Tony Greig to ICL.... mannn what adrenalin rush that guy used to give us with all the excitement he used to create. Aweful camera work adds up to the woe.Now ads don't wait for the overs to get over but even between overs (too many overs???? well we are discussing cricket) do the godrejs, vodafones et al appear with their loud jingles supressing the commentary and also pushing the match screen to a "PIP"... the TV screen looks like the player's jersey which is already full of logos of these sponsors. Hope cricket wins.... No doubt its played and telecasted on prime time TV with Saas Bahus already feeling the heat on the TRP charts !!!!!!!

The ads trouble has corrected itself as there was a whole lot of noise about it. There was even a petition on rediff for it. It's good to see that the overs are shown completely and the broadcasters showing the replays of dismissals before taking off for advertisements. The one annoying thing that has cropped up lately is the PA system at Deccan Chargers' stadium. The PA system gives a live commentary to the audiences in the stadium and interferes with the TV commentary. During the DDDvDC match, it announced after a shot: 'The crowd is absolutely delighted'... telling the listener what the listener is feeling.. Funny! Finally, good to see the King's XI getting a better uniform.

IPL convert the cricet in a costly circus.A few rich persons are dancing the players on their fingertips. If A wrestler like Khali is not a wrestler by any mean.He is only an entertainer. He accepts it in front of whole world. Than why all cricket players are not known as acters? Now they are not players, they are heroes. Patriotism is lost among all the acters.Harbhajan is showing aggresion with his own teammate Shrisant. All the sports lover want to see cricket not the acting.IPL is deviding the whole nation into pieces.A patriotic Indian is not able to decide,to support which team? Brother is Quarrling with his own brother because of only money. The whole tamasha is disastrous for cricket.Time is showing it and Time will show the blast of cricket.Industrilists have come into IPL only to grab money,if they get any loss,They must withdraw from the Industry.

The anchoring is by far the worst I have seen for a long time. Mistakes keep happening one after another, Shiv and the other dude..seem like Bollywood cut-outs. No knowledge of cricket, its an insult to the viewer. Icing on the cake is Lekha Washington who asks Umpires who is going to win the match, asks Ganguly "What makes him nervous???" and asks Kallis if "He is a classic player or a modern player???" Never knew those 2 types existed. Quite clear that cricket knowledge, passion for cricket or even presentation skills are not the criterions which have been used for selection. Its an insult on the senses..I only watch the matches now. :)
