My Dream Twenty-20 XI - Pinch Hitter

My Dream Twenty-20 XI

Manoj Madhavan - Thursday, May 01, 2008 5:20 PM

Folks,

I often think what would be the composition of an ideal Twenty-20 team?  Should it be batsmen heavy or dominated by bowlers? More allrounders? What is the ideal mix  of youth and experience?  With these thoughts in mind, I shortlisted 11 names I think would make for the right Twenty-20 team, with my reasons for choosing them.

I suggest you also come up with your dream teams. We can then compare our lists and debate, albeit hypothetically, the chances of our respective teams.

My Dream Twenty-20 XI

1. Adam Gilchrist (Wicket keeper)

With his batting skills, Gilchrist could just walk into any team be it a Test, an ODI or Twenty-20.  He stands out among premier openers in ODI and Twenty-20. His experience and exuberance are an added asset.

2. Virender Sehwag
I chose Sehwag over Sanath Jayasurya because of the right and left opening combination. His 94 against Deccan Chargers also went in his favour.

3. Mathew Hayden
The most devastating left-hander after Adam Gilchrist.

4. Andrew Symonds
Can bowl, as well as destroy bowling. Can be placed anywhere in the field.

5. Shahid Afridi
Preferred more for his bowling and aggression on the field. He still holds the record for the fastest 100 in ODI.

6. Shane Watson
He was the toughest pick for me. He didn’t get too many chances to play but proved his worth every time he was on the field. His energy level, lively nature and deceptive bowling speed are among his greatest strengths. I considered Flintoff, Pieterson, Bravo, Mascaranhas and Pollock, but I preferred Watson ahead of them.

7. MS Dhoni (Captain)
For his Midas touch. He can be used as a floater.

8. Bret Lee
If you saw the Mohali vs Mumbai match, there is no reason why you would keep Bret Lee out of your XI.

9. Shane Warne
He is an automatic entry to any team.

10. Glen McGrath
He oozes talent, temperament and tenacity… a role model for any youngster.

11. Muthiah Murlitharan
He completes my bowling department offering my team a wide variety.

Some stats: IPL matches so far: 17 Sixes: 208, Fours: 532, Runs: 5,514, Overs: 641.1, Average per over: 8.6

I don't know if these things work. As we've seen with IPL, teams like DC have had nothing so far apart from a win primarily owing to a Gilchrist century. Players like Afridi, Symonds and for that matter, Gilchrist, have not done much otherwise. Anyway, going with the spirit of the above article, I wouldn't have Afridi in my team. He is just not reliable. I'll take Yuvraj instead. He is everything Afridi is and more. And, I would prefer Vettori over Murali. One last thing, do you think this team could beat Rajasthan Royals (of course assuming there were two Watsons and Warnes each)?.

Dear manoj, I would prefer Styen in the team in place of Glen McGrath as per the present performance and have to adjust somewhere Kevin Peterson in place of Hayden and Flintoff also should be in the team in place of Shane Watson and Dhoni should be up in the Batting order, rest others are Ok

My dream 11 1 Adam Gilchrist: ( WK) a very powerful batsman in any form of cricket (Test, ODI or Twenty20) and a good wicket keeper as well. He holds the world record for the most dismissals by a wicket-keeper in ODI and is the only player to have hit 100 sixes in Test cricket 2 Gautam Gambhir: A batsman with potential and consistently playing good 3 Graeme Smith: An effective stroke-playing batsman against any kind of bowling attack 4 M S Dhoni: ( Captain ) is recognized as one of the most cool headed players and a very attacking captain. As a batter, he has shown the maturity to restrain his aggressive nature and play a responsible innings when the situation requires 5 Rohit Sharma: is a very promising young cricketer and a powerful batsman of cricket’s shorter version 6 Sahid Afridi: one of the best all-rounder 7 Andrew Symonds: a very good all-rounder and master in fielding. Has the ability to attack any kind of bowling 8 Shane Warne: one of the finest leg spin bowlers in the history of cricket and also a batsman 9 Shaun Pollock: is a medium-fast seam bowler, with the ability to deliver a quicker ball with accuracy and swing. He is considered to be one of the straightest bowlers in world cricket 10 Brett Lee: is an express bowler is capable of bowling at a very high speed 11 Zaheer Khan: a left arm pacer, Zaheer is known for his ability to swing the ball both ways, and as a batsman also holds the record for the highest Test score by a No. 11

Nice choice Manoj!!! As the game gets quicker & faster there is no place for the technically sound players like sachin, dravid, mohd yusuf...just to name a few. THE successful players will be the one with a strong Forearm (literally). The ones whose miss-hits can clear stadiums.Strangely not many indians fall under this category, Foreigners are hogging limelight in the Indian Premier League.Amongst top 10 run scorers in the IPL so far, only three are Indians. Of the rest, five are Australians with one Sri Lankan and one New Zealander completing the list. The top ten are Mathew Hayden, Brendon McCullum, Rohit Sharma, Kumara Sangakkara, Gambhir, Mike Hussey, Shane Watson, Andrew Symonds, Adam Gilchrist and Robin Uthappa. Tendulkar was a part of everybody's dream team in the past decade. He is already seeming out of favors. IPL is set to change the way world shall play cricket in future. However, a true cricket lover only hopes that extra dose of galmour doesnot kill the sport.

I discussed with my friend the other day that T20 is more about teams that give you the correct vibes and not about teams that have a lot of good (read: explosove hitting batsmen) players. DC, RCB and MI are three teams that form a part of the latter and are now at the bottom of the table. Being a DDD fan, I'm glad that Delhi team is the one that 'just feels right'- good line-length bowlers, decent left arm spinner (he's gone now though), a couple of utility bowlers, explosive pair at the top, two constructive foreigners in the middle and a more than useful with bat 'keeper. Chennai lacks bowlers, Hyderabad only has aggressive batsmen (Laxman is an exception but he is so out of sorts, he is almost a non-playing captain), Bangalore has stable batsmen but hardly any who can whack the ball, Mumbai just has too many stars or rising stars (and a God of course). Like Delhi, Rajasthan vindicate the above theory of a well balanced team being more successful. At the end of the auction and in the period leading up to the start of the tournament, Rajasthan was dubbed as the weakest team and a very good friend of mine did not have a lot of confidence in Delhi either. Ironically, both are right up there. A lot of peiple said that Kolkata and Hyderabad would be the best teams and ironically again, one is almost at the bottom, and the other is getting there fast. While it was said that Rajasthan underspent in the auctions, it is almost funny to see that these are the teams that are least affected by the exodus of Australian and Kiwi players. Things to watch for in the next few games: 1. Would Sachin lift Mumbai? 2. Can DDD middle-order fire when the top fails? 3. Can Punjab maintain the momentum or was it a blip and most importantly... 4. simply put, would Rajasthan (read: Warnie) run out of steam or is it a captain that the rest of the world is thankful that Australians never had?

Nice choice Manoj, But i beg to differ in terms of the team composition and would also prefer fresh legs in the team than the old war horses (no doubt to their capabilities) My team, 1. Virender Sehwag (his heroics with the bat are just enough to let him a entry in any team) 2. Mathew Hayden (Mr. Consisten) 3. Sachin R Tendulkar (greatest batsmen in the history of the game) 4. Yuvraj Singh (he can make mokery of any bowling) 5. Andrew Symonds (power & muscle personified) 6. Albie Morkel (a simile of Lance Klusner) 7. M.S. Dhoni (Captain) (more than a floater)& even without his midas touch he is exemplery 8. Brett Lee (wonderful bowler in any condition) 9. Daniel Vettori (a witty bowler) 10. Glenn McGrath (a bowling machine) 11. Ishant Sharma (a star in the making)

Hi Sir, I can't comment on your dream team coz I'm not that cricket buff so I'm not aware of the talent of all the players but yes I can certainly comment on the IPL T-20 coz I have watched almost all the matches. I think 20-20 is more of a hot blood game than a youngster or an experience holder game. You dont need a team with DO or DIE attitude for 20-20, you need a team with TO KILL attitude. You actually dont know what is going to happen in a 20-20 match, not even when you have players like Gilchrist or Dhoni. You dont know who can pull off the already lost match, it can be a bowler like Umar Gul who can hit 25 runs in an over or Venu Gopal who is a complete delite with his batting skills. When it comes to 20-20, a team needs three good batsmen, two for a good opening and one in the middle order to pull off the critical score. Its actually the chasing of a score that needs such players. Keeping under notice, when the IPL started the scores often crossed 200 and by the time the Aussies left for their trip, the graph definitely showed some downfall. Can we say that the Aussies were strong enough to bring a big change in the score graph? But I was certainly bowled over by the incredible Shane Warne, I'm sure more than the bucks he won in India he must have won the hearts here. I haven't seen any player yet playing so damn sensibly in such a final match. Instead of playing six n four in the last two overs he kept ones and twos going coz he was sure that he cud pull off the winning runs. What cud a player like Sohail Tanveer ask more for than getting bowling tips from the Shane Warne. In short, Shane Warne's game was a nothing less than a treat. Probably my choice of team would not be on the basis of a big cricket lover but a person who is surely starting to love cricket more and more. So, I guess am not old enough in this industry to list down the perfect team.
