Two Questions on cheerleading

Niranjan Rajadhyaksha - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 8:20 PM

Question one: How many black cheerleaders have we seen at the IPL matches?

Questions two: Does this tell us more about racism in the US or racism in India?

Hmmm, interesting. I think there were a few in the washington redskins team. But there could another reason - 1) they are one of the top names in US(or some would say so) and need to have a 'diverse' crowd, which brings us to the second point. 2) much as you hate it, even now indians (and i mean metro/urban/upscale) cant find a black woman as sexy as a white one (we've just about settled into accepting 'dusky'). There are notable exceptions like Halle Berry but they are just that - exceptions. So it follows that either they dint come with so many black members knowing this or they've not been given the same media attention. But a disclaimer here - i dont think is being racist and that anyone in india would consider this as a form of racism; racism is a little difficult to define in india; atleast i couldnt.

difference in number of black or white cheer leaders does not show racism anywhere. It seems you dont know what racism is? Ask yourself, what is racism.

If we are dealing with race in the cheerleaders scenario neither the whites nor the blacks are our race. Our race is asians. So where is the question of preferring the whites over black or the other way around. Besides, did Mallya give us a choice of picking our own cheerleaders like we do for our leaders. I guess not. So the second question is misdirected. There is not quesion of the second question. For the first question I found one cheerleader cheering for the Royal challengers. But when the whole country is fretting about whether cheerleaders are indian culture or not, where is the question of race coming from. First we need to deal with the acceptance of cheerleaders. Race is not relevant in India. Caste is. PS: I personally like a mix of both black and white. Also, you should watch the movie Bring it on.

Indians do consider fair skinned as more beautiful. Just look at Bollywood, or women classical dancers, or ads on TV. Indian movies typically have the villains as dark-skinned. We do discriminate against dark-skinned people.

Leander, if the cheerleaders did not know about Indian racism before, they certainly do now, after being expelled from Mohali because of their skin colour ! See the blog "No Darkies please, we're Indian" at the above website.
