IISc is India's top ranking engg/tech institute

Seema Singh - Sunday, August 09, 2009 11:52 AM

...Among the 67 engineering and technological institutes which have a publishing record.

Comparing this record between 1999 and 2008, Gangan Prathap and BM Gupta report in Aug 10 issue of Current Science that IISc ranks No. 1, followed by some IITs. (list below).

These institutes together have published 75,166 papers during this period, according to publication data downloaded from the SCOPUS International multidisciplinary bibliographical database. Put together, this is more than the output of the university sector (59,685 papers) and constitutes nearly 23% of the total cumulative research output from India during 1999-2008.

You can see the full report here.

The ranks are not surprising, though it will surely cause some heart-burn among non-IISc researchers, esp those in the Universities (Central Universities in particular who are better than other universities) who constantly gripe about IISc's ‘ivory tower' position.

But what is disappointing though is the output of National Institutes of Technology, or NITs who have been around for a long time (earlier known as RECs) and have been upgraded to deemed university or NIT status.

This report shows many Indian engineering and technological universities and private institutes are doing comparatively better in terms of performance.

There's a heated debate among the academics, National Knowledge Commission members and policy makers on how to improve the quality of sci-tech education in the country, which hinges very much on research and publication, a habit which most universities have almost given up. Earlier in this series in Mint and blog, we have explored this subject.

The present ranking gives one more set of data to assess where our educational institutions are.

Below is a list of top 30 institutes, followed by their number of publication and a newly proposed performance index (or p)

It's a best institute for PG. but Direct comparison of institution is not a fair idea to judge the institute. There is a lot of criteria to judge the institute. Institution have many more things to do. 1. Locality, 2. Number of Paper published. 3. No of Student involved. 4. Contribution from UG student. 5. contribution from Pg student. 6. Personality development program for student. 7. Involvement of faculty. 8. Student verses faculty relationship. 9. Discipline and punctuality of student and faculty. 10. Appropriateness of program. 11. Planning management. 12. Fund assigned to institute. 13. Revenue generated by institute. 14. Over All success rate of the student. 15. Honor earned in the market. may more factor should be considered. regards, Shakti Pravesh

Please note that the rankings are done based on research output. No other criteria are taken into account. Following things can happen here: 1. A post graduate school generates more papers per year than an undergraduate school. Hence IIsc tops the list, quite obvious. 2. An university has more number of students doing UG/PG courses compared to any top IIT/NIT. Also, more number of colleges fall under an university. Hence the number of papers coming out of universities are bound to be more than any one school. 3. Most of the IITs/NITs are renowned for the undergraduate program where research is not the main focus. Post graduate programs are more research oriented. Keeping these things in mind, if the colleges are re-ranked then it is very evident that something like following will be the result: 1. IITs, kanpur, Mumbai, Madras... 2. NITs, Trichy, Warangal... 3. BITs Pilani And then other colleges.

In the research project is two division one is Mythological and second is scientific methodes using in research. these are two divisions formation the Earth to Ayodhya. suryavamsha list 123 rulers in the list one of the Ram avatar he was went foot route three divisions one is Ayodhya to Mithula second is Ayodhya to Lanka third is Ayodhya to Sarayu river. In my research the second of Rama foot route . Sri Rama was built sethu from Indian edge point that is Kanyakumari tha bridge length is 100 yojanas that means 791.2kms distance of lanka . these are two impotent points to move from original place as per sources of sea level increase every year, continental drift, in ocean increase of magnetic energy , earth megalithic is decrease , ice plate decrease, temperature is increase every 60 years , as so many region of the sethu and lanka move and last stage the lanka is melt in Srilanka and sethi in between Dhanushkodi and Mannar(Sri lanka) this tis my research project completed but which universities submitting process not known plese give me guidelines as submit process.

The result published here is stricly on the basis of reasearch and "facts".It has been mentioned by the authors that the ranking in based on the number of research papers published. If anyone has any problem or doubt about the rankings then he/she can verify the facts.I,being a student of Jadavpur University, know the standard and number of projects conducted here.My 1 year senior who recently got admission in MIT,USA had 30 published research papers from international forums and journals.I myself have 3 project papers. So i advise do not go by emotion,go by facts which are verifiable unlike emotion or wrong notions being nurtured for ages.

And by the way here research activities and projects are emphasized and stressed as much in the UG level as in PG level.I am myself an undergraduate. It is really a comical comment that universities having larger number of students will have larger number of project papers.Going by that logic India should have won much much more gold medals in Olympics than those nations having much much less population than ours. But that does not happen.Anything good needs merit, dedication and hard work not "numbers".

JU is no doubt a good University. I must say one of the best. But if someone is talking about "RESEARCH" and "FACTS"(quote unquote), then the ugly truth is only and only the ETC (Electronics and Telecomm Department of JU) can uplift the flag. I have doubt whether the other departments consist those Brilliant Research Mentalities or not. Though I am not from JU, bt i have closely seen JU. Anyways, I am not going into the Debate of placing JU and Anna University before IITs and some RECs. But if we are talking about names, then JU and Anna University are lagging far behind of IITs and some RECs. I guess the author should rethink about all the facts....
