Google heart Infosys. Infosys heart employees.

There has seldom been a sadder time to be friends with people in the banking and finance industries. Half of them sit at home jobless and the other half sit paranoid in the office while their retail consumers empty the cash boxes. Gone were the days when a new restaurant opening in Mumbai meant conning the nearest banker into paying for everyone's dinner, promising to pay him back and then forgetting all about it as the poor banker worked 11 weekends on the trot presumably selling complex derivatives to AIG or Lehman.

Which is why we are back to making friends with people in the Information Technology industry. While we do not completely understand economics, apparently a week rupee is good new for local IT factories and the geeks within. But even then we must be selective. Apparently Info-scions are the people to hob nob with. Why? Let me explain using Google...

A few days ago a reader of this blog alerted us to an interesting trend that emerged when using the search engine. The full story has already been chronicled at this blog but we'll tell you about it anyways.

Search for each of the following phrases on Google:

  • tcs firing
  • wipro firing
  • satyam firing
  • infosys firing

The first three, as may be expected, throw up news results of the firms laying of employees and ranty blogs by people who work for them.

The last one, however, throws up a surprise:

Google, taken aback by your insinuation that Infosys actually fires people, quickly gathers itself together before suggesting to the contrary: Did you mean Infosys hiring? Try it for yourself.

This raises many questions: Does Google know something we don't? Is Infy immune to economic downturns maladies? Can you not be fired if Infosys hires you? Are there openings for tech bloggers at Infy?

The mind boggles.

Damn these IT guys, last known IT crunch (read Y2K) and firms hired like crazy! Banking/Finance crunch and you lose out on nice food. And then Friends and acquaintances from Bank of America and Citicorp send you forwards mocking the US Finance mess, blissfully ignoring the fact that they are not far away.

I like Infosys HR philosophy and feel that’s the way to go – a blend of capitalism with practical reality. It’s easy to fire employees when times are bad, doesn’t take any guts to do that. You need real leadership to say we will not fire. Infy does not fire employees, but through it’s policies ensures cost come down. That way there is no job loss, and families survive; though employees may no longer get goodies like free transportation / food / facilities or for that matter great salary increases or skyrocketing bonuses for top executives. Employees – hence families and society at large can live with these rather than facing a job loss leading to a huge disturbance at individual -> family -> society level.

omg wow...is google like the crystal ball from fairy tales...can we ask google the solution to world peace...maybe google will gather itself and tell us something...or maybe we should try synonyms of firing like layoff...pink slip...i m sure u r getting the drift....and even a 5th grader knows that google knows a lot about a lot of things which we dont know or can imagine...

Hi Sidin, That was pretty interesting. Thank you for bringing it to our attention; next time we want to know what Infosys is NOT doing, we know where to look at :-) Reminded me of this joke - A company, feeling it was time for a shakeup, hires a new CEO. This new boss is determined to rid the company of all slackers. On a tour of the facilities, the CEO notices a guy leaning on a wall. The room is full of workers and he wants to let them know he means business! The CEO walks up to the guy and asks, "And how much money do you make a week?" Undaunted, the young fellow looks at him and replies, "I make $300.00 a week. Why?" The CEO then hands the guy $300 in cash and screams, "Here's a week's pay, now GET OUT and don't come back!" Feeling pretty good about his first firing, the CEO looks around the room and asks "Does anyone want to tell me what that goof-off did here?" With a sheepish grin, one of the other workers mutters, "Pizza delivery guy from Domino's." Cheers, Salil

http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum30/30464.htm This is the response I got from google when I emailed them about the algo: Thank you for your note. Google uses spell checking software to check queries against the most common spelling of each word. When we calculate a much greater number of relevant search results with an alternative spelling, you'll see "did you mean: (more common spelling)" at the top of your search results page. For example, a search for [ Google bot ] returns approximately 1,620,000 search results. At the top of the search results page, you'll see "did you mean: Googlebot." Clicking on "Googlebot," the correct spelling of our web crawler, yields a search with nearly a million more results. Please note that our spell check feature is completely automated, and we cannot make manual changes to individual suggestions. Regards, The Google Team

yep .. its true .. you won't be fired too easily if u get hired by infosys. how can i say this, u ask? well, i am an infoscion and i know what goes on inside. They will cut on quarterly parties or just on the party budgets, ask us to work 15 min extra everyday .. and give a teeny bit less incentive money, but they will try their best (and when i say best, i actually mean the bestest!) to not kick you out of home :)

Bull shit Infosys Company .... I am an ex-employee and this ethicless company sacked me out of the Job saying you are a NOn-Performer. I got Most valuable player award, winner of Quiz 2008 etc etc...... Even today I am unable to understand why they have given me the awards and removed me from the Job on Non-performer criteria.
