Will the iPhone kill the Wii?

When you seriously sit and think about it, the thing that gives the Wii its addictive kick, its Mojo if you will, is the accelerometer in its controllers. So all you really need, to give the Wii a run for its money, is a stack of accelerometers and a game to use it with. Speaking purely in terms of critical elements we mean.

Well the iPhone boasts of a top-notch accelerometer and already has a bustling application development platform. So it was only a matter of time before someone, somewhere realized the Wii-butt-kickability of a game that used the motion sensor in the iPhone in the same way that Wii Fit or Wii Sports does.

This morning Mashable carried a post about iFun:

But tonight, SGN is taking it to a whole different level, allowing you to utilize the Nintendo Wii-like functionality to turn your iPhone (or iPod Touch) into a computer game controller that can be used on your desktop machine.

Called iFun, the new features are an extension of SGN’s existing gaming lineup (iBowl, iBaseball, iGolf, etc.). iGolf is the first game to get the iFun treatment, and while you’ll look utterly ridiculous playing it, it’s incredibly cool and shows where iPhone games could be headed.

Nintendo better watch out. If the iFun thing takes off imagine the predicament they could be in.

But then this also set me thinking... what if someone figured out a way of using the iPhone as a game controller for the Wii?

Hmm. Interesting.

Interesting it is, however this has already been done for the N series(N82,N95 & N96) by intrepid freeware developers(and quite obviously leeched by some folks!!!)...i must say playing Quake on TV with the accelerometer on my N82 is real fun*. The big question right now is whether the notoriously slow iphone app development process will ruin any real chance of it giving the Wii a run for its money. *- did i forget to mention... they have ported Quake onto the N series, and it does pack sufficient juice to run the damn thing....time was when u used to run Quake on ur PC after quitting all other applications...sigh.....
