Become a model for Facebook. Or not.

A curious thing happened a few days ago when Cheryl Smith's husband was browsing through Facebook. He suddenly saw one of those dating ads they show you on the website. You know the type. "This hottie wants you right now! And we are not thinking platonic! Wink! Nudge! Ok click now."

You know how it is.

But the only catch was the hottie in the picture in the advertisement was... Cheryl Smith. Thankfully Cheryl's husband laughed it off. (No doubt wondering to himself what would have transpired if the vice versa had happened. Shudder.)

Apparently Facebook has a setting that allows you to permit (or not) the social network to use your image in advertisements. Cheryl tells you how in her blogpost:

If you don’t want to show up in your friends’ FaceBook ads, go to:

  1. Settings
  2. Privacy
  3. News Feed and Wall
  4. Click on “Facebook Ads”
  5. In the “Appearance in Facebook Ads” box, click “no one” (unless, of course, you actually want to tell your spouse to check out hot singles)

Don't tell us we didn't warn you.

(I am currently working on a modeling career. So I am seriously hoping they use my image in that 'Hot Singles Now!' ad. Or 'Passably Decent Looking Singles Now!' ad. Or anything really. I could use any breaks.)

Thanks to all the great comments on my blog and elsewhere, I've learned that these ads aren't actual Facebook ads. Instead, they're third party app ads (likely culprit - dumb quizzes), which may in fact be a violation of Facebook's Terms of Service http://www.facebook.com/terms.php See Number 9 - Special Provisions applicable to Developers/Operators of Applications and Websites. The way I read it, their use of my photo is a violation. What do you think?
