Working Through the Night? Don't Forget this Neat Little App

The pitch black room. The single white glow of a computer screen.

Most of us are familiar with the droop-eyed persistence of working through the night on a tight deadline, and the way the sunlight next morning seems to pierce a little too brightly. Most monitors today, especially some new laptop screens, are way more bright than they need to be, and starting into them hours at a stretch in an otherwise pitch black environment is obviously not good for the eyes. Fortunately, there's a solution.

F.lux is a nifty little 500kb app (that resides in your system tray) that adjusts your monitor's colour hues depending on the time of day: warm and orangey at night, and white and er.. sunlightey during the day. Explains the f.lux website:

'f.lux makes your computer screen look like the room you're in, all the time. When the sun sets, it makes your computer look like your indoor lights. In the morning, it makes things look like sunlight again. Tell f.lux what kind of lighting you have, and where you live. Then forget about it. F.lux will do the rest, automatically.'

As a frequent nocturnal agent of reportage, I can attest to the usefulness of this. The warm nightly glow that f.lux recommends is much easier on the eyes, and you don't have to look like Billie Joe Armstrong the next morning.

Go get.
