Apple sells its iPhones to AT & T in the US for $350 .. which in turn offers them to the public for $199 coz of the 2 year contract (and breaking which means a penalty of $200 .. so buying it in the US and running back here wont be anything short of 'illegal') ....
So by no means will Vodafone or Airtel get them for less than $350 apiece .. which translates to a lil over 15K .. and something tells me that this isnt all we'd have to fork out ....

and anyways dont you people drooling all over it know that
1. u cant change the batt
2. no 3g in india (as of now)
3. no expansion slot (ok lets assume u dont need that after the 8/16 gigs)
4. only 5hrs talktime!
5. just a 2 meg cam ...
6. no video recording
7. cant see no. of words remaining in an sms .. etc

wipe that drool now .. this aint worth it jus for the 'cool' factor!!

re: So how much is the iPhone 3G really going to cost in India?

@ Seema: Ah. at last, i find someone who shares my thought that iphone wont come for an equivalent of $199. as contracts aren't successful in India, vodafone and airtel are gonna charge hefty.

Now that, everywhere Iphone comes with contract or else at above $500 means, even Grey market wont be cheap. moreover, without gprs, iphone is more of a brick with a large screen

I have been using one since, sept 2007, and i have consistently exceeded 1500 rs just on gprs with vodafone. If iphone 2.0 comes with a unlimited gprs plan, i ll definitely switch.

Other thing is, will mass market India accept iPhone, beyond the initial craze?.
One cant put music or any media on to it without itunes and a pc. even to send from it, you need to be either tech savy or jail break the phone. One cant import or export contacts or forward an SMS.

Nokia did well by being loud in all sense. Its remarkably loud (irritating to me) speaker volume and no restrictions in sending and receiving songs and other media (they don't bother about piracy) coupled with relatively cheap pricing worked.

Are we , majority of Indians who don't own a personal pc going to q up at the nearby vodafone or apple store, to pay and download music and pics?

Now, one can argue that, people in the target price range of iphone should be having access to pc.

But in India, I think, we give more importance to show off, we spend way beyond our means when it comes to mobile phones. You can spot most of the lower income group (so called lower middle class in India) sporting premium cell phones and keep changing them too.

Whether it succeeds or not doesnt matter to me. its been the best device i am using and sure Nokia and SE will take years to catch up with iphone's user interface. I am also impressed and thankfull that, apple, instead of bringing in hardware changes, have continously given software updates, making your device feel new even now. Infact I will be going in for a v 2.0 software upgrade once Zibri comes up with a unlock and jailbreak for the same.
SE have fooled me by bringing K810 just after k800 and then again k850. k850 being the pathetic of the lot. I ceased becoming a SE fan, disappointed after getting a k850. Since sep 07, I havnt thought of switching to any new handset, just because nothing better came , and nothing better is expected soon. Something that could close was SE Experia, but SE has now differed the release, thank god, they realized the folly of launching K850 without a proper firmware.

Any ways, I have been happy with this device and is still fascinated and excited about it, as I was in July 07. I paid 28 k at that time, but i still feel it was the best buy ever. It still have me hooked on, thanks to the numerous free apps available on jailbreak ed iphones and the Internet is just awesome.

To all waiting to get hold of iPhone, i would say:

Go ahead, take it at 25k, its still worth it. when compared to the N series and SE P1/w960 of similar price range, iPhone is a thousand times better. Just watch a video or scroll through the image gallery of iPhone and then you will feel as if Nokias, HTCs and SE are cheating you with such slow, sluggish devices. For the money you spend, you are certainly worth a better device.

GO for the Iphone

However, it is more likely to be around Rs. 15,000 initially. I don' agree with the suggestion about admiring it from a distance for a year, because by then, a newer model will be available making the older one unattractive.
