MAC address can be changed actually, using device manager. Long back my ISP had his service MAC dependent. I used to run three machines with one connection by overwriting MAC. ;)

LOL..!!! I very well remember your plight with the Netgear router and how the Missus had helped resolve things :) I'm surprised she didn't secure it in the first place with that "thing for IT" that she has :D And network SSIDs remind of the time I was setting up the Netgear router at my Fiancé's place and when I searched for WiFi networks, I could find all SSIDs with the neighbours' names. I started off by asking her if there is a Krishnan in the society and she replied "Of course, Krishnan uncle lives in the flat on the above floor, how did you know?" And then I followed it up with "Also Amit, Shivani.... etcetera" Wow - what a moment it was, she was for sure impressed with my Spy Powers :)
