The intellectually bankrupt Indian Left - A Romantic Realist

The intellectually bankrupt Indian Left

Raju Narisetti - Monday, December 15, 2008 4:45 PM

Muntazer al-Zaidi, the Iraqi journalist who threw shoes at US President George W. Bush during a press conference, in what is typically an act that ranks among the worst possible insults in the Arab world, was at least making a direct--and risky--public political statement about Iraqi deaths following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. Indeed, the television journalist whose twin shoe attack, while apparently shouting "this is a goodbye kiss from the Iraqi people, dog. This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq," forced Mr Bush to duck during a press conference, is now in detention, accused by the Iraqi government of a "barbaric act" and faces serious charges for attacking a visiting President. (see video of the incident)

 George Bush ducks

(Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki tries to block a shoe as US President George Bush takes evasive action)

But back in India, here is what a rather opportunistic Sitaram Yechury, the Politburo member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), had to say as he desperately tried to hog some headlines and find ways to grab political capital from the incident:

Because of PM, shoes hurled at the Indian people too: Yechury

"Because of the Prime Minister, the shoes were hurled at the people of India too, a top CPI(M) leader said today while reacting to the lobbing of shoes at US President George Bush in Baghdad. "The Prime Minister had told Bush that all the people in India love him. It is because of this statement, the shoes have been hurled at the people of India too," Politburo member Sitaram Yechury told reporters who sought his comments on the incident." PTI

I don't know about you but the Romantic Realist thinks perhaps it is time India's voters gave the Left the boot it deserves, come national elections. If nothing else for this kind of opportunistic nonsense from its leaders, long bereft of any real policy positions.

I wholeheartedly agree. This double faced party will lick China's boots without a thought to the interests of their own nation- was it India?

while i couldn't quite get the import of comrade yechuri's quip (i would have expected better and wittier sound-bytes from him - which to me reflects more a bankruptcy of a sense of humour than ideology; i would credit com yechury with more of the former - while the latter has never been a forte of the indian communists, who have always fought someone else's battle by proxy. my father used to say - indian communists are like german silver - they are neither indian nor communists!! ) but, the general reaction to the incident is quite well reflected in the string of comments to the al jazeera link provided by you :(http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2008/12/2008121419453773379.htmll). i would commend those to the fans of the Romantic Realist. com yechuri would have done well if he had picked up one of those quotes, which would have made far better sound-bytes. for whatever you may say of the communists - they never had any false qualms about being unduly original :-) www.ghoses.blogspot.com

Just wondering if it would be justified for a journalist to throw shoes at Sitaram Yechury for all the atrocities committed by communist party workers in Singur and Nandigram.... Of course, there is no comparison between Bush and Sitaram Yechury, as Bush has helped bring democracy to Iraq whereas communists, if given an opportunity, would rather do away with decomacracy.

The left is the most out-of-touch party within India. Its ironical that the left still holds communist ideals dear and opposes every pro-development effort when our communist neighbour to the North is growing by leaps and bounds by giving up their socialist and communist ideas and adopting capitalism. I agree with Raju that its time India shuttered these parties out of focus by voting them out. But who can convince Kerala and West Bengal? IndiaPuzzle http://indiapuzzle.wordpress.com

From GM dealer closing list

Bankruptcy is the most painful part in running up the business. The worst was, no matter how much you try to repel from it, it seems that situation doesn’t get any better. Unfortunately this is what happened to those, which were not able to cope up with the difficulty that the company had been going through. The GM dealer-closing list has over 1,000 dealerships on it slated to shut, as General Motors is drastically scaling back to get their house in order. The Chrysler dealerships closing list was also a long one and the company has filed for bankruptcy protection. Both companies received large low interest loans from the government, and began restructuring in order to return the companies to financial health and competitive status in the market. Dealers are lamenting the move, and experts say that nothing, including the GM dealer closing list, will solve GM's problems with needing debt relief.
