Day 31: How Indians used to travel

Priya Ramani - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 3:51 AM

So we're sitting in Vancouver looking up scanned copies of Sherwoodian, the magazine of the school our fathers went to. There's a hilarious essay about Indians and travelling abroad. It was a senior prizewinning essay in 1959...alas I can't cut and paste it but here's a sample:

"The language problem is a hinderance, and often a cause for frustration. Then there is the problem of etiquette. How many Indian people can eat peas without spilling them with a fork, and can wield a knife and fork with grace and ease? Again, a very few. Imagine a rich "lala" arriving in Monaco and not knowing how to carve a chicken or eat sensibly with a knife and fork! He would be ridiculed, his country disgraced for producing such unmannerly specimens. The poor man would be told by an outraged Frenchman, very politely to leave the hotel. And then he would be the talk of town."

Really...it seems like journey of a lifetime. Am sure, you are making many people envious and may be, inspiring some of them to follow your trail... Where can I find your itinerary?

Samar, Priya.. This is divine intervention or what! For days, me and husband have been talking about leaving behind the corporate world for a while and taking off for a trip aroud the world. Every waking minute spent in debating should we, shouldnt we? Money? Jobs? And here I come across you guys doing just the same! Inspired? Yes, definitely. How will we work it out... dont know.. Wish u would write more about the 'decision' itself. How long did you take to 'take the plunge'? cheers, and luck,

Priya and Samar If you are still in Vancouver, meet my several friends. Two in particular : Klaus Ferlow, who treated his over 20 years old psoriasis with Neem and now runs Ferlow Botanicals. Rev. Albert John, who stays on a ship on Vancouver island with his wife and two children. I can give you their telephone numbers if you wish. Best, Leo
