140 characters can change the world. Ok, let me tone it down a bit. 140 characters can help disseminate information on political upheaval (Iran), natural disasters (China) and even terrorist attacks (India). They can help connect politicians, celebrities and sportsmen, to their dedicated fans, albeit in a ‘limited way’. They can help you and me, share our every thought, emotion and just about anything we want. Of course, as long as its in 140 characters. Welcome to Twitter, which, unless you live on an unconnected lonely island in the South Pacific.

It’s past midnight and I am walking along the canal, hoping to take the next left to Dam Square, the closest thing Amsterdam has to a city centre. On both sides, booths awash with pink fluorescence encase woman displaying their wares, while neon signs frame them, dragging attention to all things adult. The light reflects off the water in the canal, giving a heady glow to cycles tied to almost anything metallic (Amsterdam lives on cycles), people staggering in and out of bars, and moored boats. It’s getting late for a Sunday evening, the crowd seems.

Moving around in Berlin or Hamburg is no easy task. Reading road signs, with the omnipresent beta (β, pronounced like a very hard ‘S' sound) is even more difficult. Try asking locals for directions with German names, in your distinctly accented Indian English, and you would know what I mean. The Queen's language may have taken over the Internet, but it is far from making any inroads in continental Europe. For a techie, though, there is always another way out. Technology is the lingua franca of the world, and what better place to practice.
