    I should have seen it coming. It was a simple urge to see a fashion show. But, when you are on the wrong side of 35, and have never been anywhere near one of those talk-of-the-town celebrity parties, it is not easy to convince your friends that you are actually interested in fabrics, patterns or, even design. With two fashion weeks happening in Delhi recently, I asked a friend on the "lifestyle" beat to help me sneak in. "Mid-life crisis? Go get a life man," she chuckled. Huh, clearly she knew I had no idea of how halter necks.

    Normal 0 It had to happen. An almost two-month-long struggle last year with a bank in Delhi over cheque clearance got me seriously thinking if we can, possibly, do without them at all. Disgruntled, disappointed at the futility of the thought, the idea died faster than I could imagine. And before long, I found myself joining the long list of people who believe you are too insignificant when it comes to dispute resolution with big businesses. After all, it is no easy task circumventing the chain of command starting with know-it-all executives, unhelpful.

    A routine circular from the office accounts department a couple of weeks ago, asking for details of our investment proofs for income tax deductions, set me thinking. I was not sure if I had enough “tools” (what they call investments) to avoid massive cuts in my salary. As it turned out, I didn’t have very many, and indeed I’ve never had very many for much of my working life. “That’s not possible,” says a friend who claims to be well versed in all things financial. “Not too many people do that, you see? Not when you are married and have a daughter.
