So you said no to nuts when they asked you to. ‘These little devils are packed with calories, so steer clear’, read nutrition news headlines. And you stayed away. Now we all know how much the nutritionists are in favour of those pesky small packets. Horror stories about chocolates too have all of a sudden found a sweet ending: Researchers now tell us that cocoa cuts down your risk for certain cancers (no small inducement!), so small amounts are okay. Phew! But what all this means is that it’s really tough deciding what to eat (and what not to) these.

So you have had a bad day (calorie-wise). You've had a parathewali breakfast, a burger meal for lunch, a shake for tea, some popcorn at the movies... But the worse news is that you still have to tackle dinner. And you are hungry, very much so! So should you brace yourself (or even chain yourself to the bed) and skip the meal, or is there a less punishing way out? Well, the good news is that your body gives you second chances. It's not absolutely rigid or unforgiving. All you have to do is take that chance and use it right! Making up What.

Besides the cheats mentioned in the earlier post, there are some proven, very obvious, yet often missed out steps that help BIG. Follow these three and feel the difference. They are easy enough. Have some protein with your breakfast. (It is understood here that breakfast is not to be missed at all.) Why? Because proteins rev up your metabolism right away (more than carbs and fat) and the earlier you get your engines going, the better. In fact, make sure you include a source of lean protein with every meal. Choose from chicken, tuna, salmon, eggs.

Who says you have to officially start a "diet"? Or make a big hullabaloo about exercising for two hours every day? I have seen most slim people remain so by virtue of some simple, almost subconscious habits. Feel like munching because of boredom? Have a hot, low-cal beverage. You'll tend to sip it slowly over an extended period of time, because it's too hot to gulp. And at the same time, it keeps your hands, mouth and even mind somewhat occupied. Just make sure you opt for a drink under 100 calories: green or herbal teas; fruit.

Ask me about how to lose weight and I'll ask you to glug down lots of water. My exact prescription actually is: Have a glass as soon as you get up. Then finish a 1 litre bottle of water at work before lunch time. One more bottle after lunch, to be finished by the time you leave for home. Keep a filled water bottle on your desk at all times, I suggest. Plus drink some more whenever you remember to. Surely you are itching to ask, "What's water got to do with weight loss?" Lots, actually! For starters, it fills you up for zero calories.

I tend to lose my appetite totally when I am stressed. My friends call me lucky. Whether I am lucky or not is a different story (as not eating enough has its own problems), but it is a fact that gaining pounds is often synonymous with stress for most. Still when trying to lose weight, almost everyone single-mindedly targets excess calories and overlooks this important factor. Let me explain the connection. When we face a threatening situation, our body secretes adrenaline to initiate the "fight-or-flight" response. Adrenaline triggers.

I know someone (actually, a whole lot of someones) who ends up eating a big bar of chocolate or a packet of chips just 20 minutes after a diet meal of, say, stir-fried mushrooms and a watery soup. Whatever calories she tries to save on her CalorieWise meal ends up doubled or tripled sooner rather than later — minus the satisfaction (and nutrients) of a decent, healthy and happy meal; plus a hefty dose of loaded guilt. I ask, why do this? Besides the calorie mess-up, the damage the guilt does is best avoided. Guilt, after all, is a very negative.

When actress Renee Zellweger was asked how she gained the weight for her role in the movie Bridget Jones' Diary and lost it again after the movie, she said, "It's really just maths." In other words, if you eat more calories than you use, in the long-term, it will lead to weight gain; and if you eat less than what you expend, you'll lose. It's pretty simple: it's all about calories in and calories out. Now who doesn't know that? But though this formula is simple in theory, most people find it difficult to put into.

"The numbers are totally wrong. I am sure something's very wrong with that contraption the doc had wrapped round my arm," my cousin bellowed on the phone yesterday. "I am only 26! How can my BP be high?" --- the tone was almost accusing. Let me explain. By numbers he meant the high blood pressure reading. Contraption was his way of describing the BP machine. And we were having this conversation because I had pointed derisively to his decidedly junk-and-beer belly only a few weeks earlier, and told him to get started on a.

I am just very tired listening to my best friend’s bleats about how much angst the (nonexistent) extra tyre around her waist causes her… And I am also equally exhausted with trying to explain to a colleague that his beer belly is not cute, it’s downright unhealthy. And these two really are just two of the reactions I get from almost everyone around me, differing only in degrees… but all equally distorted. Why can’t one be sensible about one’s size? Why do so many of us subscribe to either the ‘I am fine, I only look fat’ group or the ‘I have an.

My teenage nephew’s classmate once told me that she wanted to lose weight so that she could get a boyfriend. And my dad says that he needs to knock off excess weight so that his knees will stop hurting… Everyone I meet wants to lose weight. Well, almost everyone. Maybe it has something to do with my being a nutritionist. And when they ask me how to go about it, I ask them: ‘First of all, why do you need to lose weight?’ This foxes many, but puts things in perspective right away. I think that until the answer to this one question has been sorted.
