Barely had our summer-internships concluded in June when efforts towards organization of LITMUS ’09 began in earnest- there really never is a dull moment at NITIE! LITMUS is the annual IT Management conclave at NITIE and is the brainchild of the students of the Post Graduate Diploma in Information Technology Management. LITMUS ’09 will be held on August 8th at the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE’s) Powai campus. The primary focus of LITMUS ’09 will be on contemporary themes regarding the effective use of Information Technology.

The summer internships are now behind us. The memories, however, are still fresh. This was among the first such experiences for most of us. We all got a chance to roll up our sleeves and 'get down to it'. So yes, it is something each management student would definitely like to have tucked under his belt. Summers at NITIE were fun. Students undertook internships in various companies spread across different domains across India. NITIE also received quite a few accolades during the internship period. It was among a select group of B-schools.

We are three weeks into our summer internships. That's five whole days a week for most of us. (And six for the less fortunate.) Three weeks of incessant work from the word "go". With the kind of job scenario we're seeing today, we know we have to hit the ground running. Always looking over our shoulder so a deadline doesn't catch up with us. Always ready to please. We're prepared to do anything for that all-forgiving snitch-in-quidditch pre-placement offer. But while we struggle tirelessly it is essential not to lose sight.

The recession were seeing today may have its own advantages. It seems to be driving an increasing number of young students towards careers in the government. It is only now that we have finally opened our eyes to the opportunity that was staring us in the face all along: An opportunity for learning, growth and power to bring about change/reform. The Indian government is in urgent need of bright talented youth with a clear conscience, to take over the reigns of administration. And though there are refreshing signs of change with young and educated.

Come April, and yet another batch of management students will spread their wings and explore their new habitat – the corporate world. They will now experience management at first hand. From beyond the confines of a class room and the generalities of your average case study. This is for real. Students at NITIE do go prepared though. A major factor is the course which is very realistic and replete with industry interaction through various weekend projects undertaken in collaboration with the professors. Another leg-up is two internships- summer and.

With this post Ken D'Souza, a first year student from NITIE, Mumbai, begins On The Job's B-School Journal series. Students will post about, campus events, academia, placements and give readers a view into B-School Life. It's that time of the year again. Lakhs of MBA aspirants across the country wait with bated breath for the various B-Schools to declare the results of their respective entrance tests. Then another agonizing wait before the cut-offs are released till finally the invitation letters for Group Discussions/Personal Interviews.
